Discipline is a major source of conflict in
stepfamilies. In fact, it is such a common issue that it is ranked as one of
the top three concerns for stepfamilies entering therapy. Parents may find that
they have opposing disciplinary styles (authoritative/permissive), or they may
have unconscious fears about letting the stepparent discipline the children at
all. Couples need to talk about discipline in general, and come to an agreement
as to what the behavioral expectations and discipline will look like in their
